Saizar Sagardotegia takes the 2022 National Grill Competition award

 

With Ramón Lertxundi in charge of the grill, the Saizar Sagardotegia restaurant (Usurbil, Gipuzkoa) takes the National Grill Competition award with Discarlux meat.

The  13th National Grill Competition, San Sebastian Gastronomika – Euskadi Basque Country's most veteran contest, now has a winner. The Saizar Sagardotegia restaurant in Usurbil (Gipuzkoa), headed up by grill master Ramón Lertxundi, took the award with Discarlux meat, also declared the competition's finest. Saizar Sagardotegia takes over from the Pura Brasa restaurant (Barcelona), and Discarlux takes over from Beef on Food; the winners of the 2021 event.

The 13th National Grill Competition was held on Wednesday on the Kursaal terrace. Early on in the day, next to the Cantabrian Sea, the eight Josper grills had been set up for the eight finalists to satisfy a jury panel composed of such personages as Manu Yebras, José Carlos Capel, Carlos Maribona, Amaya Ortuzar, Benjamín Lana, Juan Atanasio Carrasco Gómez, Juanjo Arratibel, Alexandra Sumasi, Julia Pérez and Nieves Barragán.

The event was led by journalist Ignacio Medina, a grill enthusiast who livened up the competition and called on the panel to judge the work of "one of the world's most beautiful professions". Following some discussion to assess the quality of the meat, cooking technique, texture and flavour, the jury came out in favour of Ramón Lertxundi.

He won through in the end against seven opponents, from various parts of the country. They were Asador Urkiola (Beasain, Gipuzkoa), with Goya meat; Mano Lenta (Vitoria), with Arcecarne; La Cocina de Casa Luisa (Ayegui, Navarra), with meat from Cooperativa de Navarra; Mesón de la Reina (Granada), with Rubiato Paredes meat; Asador Iturrama (Pamplona), with Makro; Los Patios (Gijón), with Trasacar, and El Nacional (Barcelona), with Carnicas Lyo meat.
