Spain's best apple tart, by La Carpintería in Vigo

Spain's best apple tart is made in Vigo, at La Carpintería. That was the outcome of Tuesday's 2nd Spanish Apple Tart by Asturias Championship at San Sebastian Gastronomika.

Elena Garmendia, from La Carpinteria restaurant (Vigo), won the 2nd Spanish Apple Tart by Asturias Championship on Tuesday at Gastronomika, in the wake of Madrid's Carbón Negro restaurant, which took the first award. The jury panel this year was composed of Alexandra Sumasi, Lola Montes, Lourdes Aedo, Xavier Agulló, Natalia Menéndez, Miguel Sierra and Gonzalo Armas, executive chef at Carbón Negro, winner of the first award.

La Carpintería came through against the restaurants and pastry outlets Asterius Food (Boadilla del Monte, Madrid), Bardal* (Ronda, Málaga), Pastelería Cabo Busto (Luarca, Asturias), Rosconería Bargueño (Madrid) and Luque Pastelería (San Sebastián).

Also known as Apple Pie, Tatin or Strudel, apple tart is one of the world's most emblematic desserts. And San Sebastian Gastronomika-Euskadi Basque Country has arranged this championship in its honour.
