Cádiz cuisine and the wines of Jerez, three centuries of dialogue with the UK

Sponsored by Diputación provincial de Turismo de la Diputación de Cádiz

The province of Cádiz has played host to many peoples and cultures over the last 3,000 years, culminating in the extensive range of culture and gastronomy we know today. Here we will be explaining the influence of the British.

Between the 18th and 20th centuries many families of merchants and winemakers from the UK settled in the province of Cádiz, attracted by the sherry trade. With them they also brought their tastes, customs, ingredients and recipes, which were soon added or versioned in popular cuisine, in many cases with new names, and in others by adapting the names to Cádiz speech.

This is the case of Jerez's traditional restorative, the "candie", originally "candy egg" in English, or the popular local pot roast "carne mechá" inspired by the ultra-British "roast beef". This showcooking session will feature all these meeting points between the UK and Cádiz, with the wine of Jerez as the common denominator of this combination.
